Hostel Review: 5footway.inn Project Boat Quay

Newly revamped 5footway.inn Project Boat Quay gave me the opportunity to have a glimpse of what it’s like living alongside the Singapore River with views overlooking Marina Bay Sands and Singapore’s iconic skyscrapers. And it most certainly didn’t disappoint. This non-smoking hostel blends modernity with an artistic flair, with its chic furnishings and wooden flooring. Situated above the restaurants at Boat Quay, 5footway.inn Project Boat Quay spans 4 shophouses, into a labyrinth of corridors and rooms.

Checking in to 5footway.inn Project Boat Quay

The reception is open 24/7, and while we had to wait for check in, we were entertained by the Singlish phrases written on the wall and booklets introducing the local dishes. Even the cushions were in the shape of uniquely-Singaporean snacks! They sure know how to get guests fit right into the Singapore culture.

Even when only the rooms and reception was equipped with air-conditioned units, the 5-foot-wide walkways were kept cool with fans.

5footway.inn Project Boat Quay’s Room

Superior Triple Room

The air-conditioned Superior Triple Room we checked into presented a minimalistic, spacious and clean feel upon entering. Rooms are unlocked with a card, and a beeper sounds when doors are not closed properly.

The room layout design has been well thought out to maximize the space. There are 2 power sockets in our room, and a bedside lamp was cleverly mounted on the wall despite the lack of a bedside table.

Because our room was facing a back alley at Boat Quay, the noise from the alley in the middle of the night permeated through the windows and kept me up.

5footway.inn Project Boat Quay’s Services

The Handy device

The Handy device

It is essentially a smartphone, with unlimited 4G network. And they offer it to every guest that checks in. That means you are free to surf the internet and download apps as you wish. You can carry it around on your discovery around Singapore, and stay connected on-the-go.

On top of that, you can make free calls to up to 5 Southeast Asian countries. The Handy device also provides informative posts about Singapore e.g. best brunches, yoga spots, free things to do in Singapore and local dishes to try.

We were very impressed with this complimentary device, and wished this service can be provided more widely across different countries.

Tea, coffee, milo and hot water are provided complimentary 24/7. Daily breakfast comes with every stay, with a standard choice of either toast or cornflakes.

Luggage storage is available free for up to 24 hours, with a fee of $2 per piece imposed for every day you exceed.

Wi-Fi around 5footway.inn Project Boat Quay is complimentary, and signal is strong throughout the entire property.

5footway.inn Project Boat Quay’s Location

Clarke Quay Singapore night
Singapore River by night

5footway.inn Project Boat Quay sits by the quieter version of Clarke Quay at Boat Quay, yet there are no lack of bar options around. Whether you like to spend your night by the bar revelling in the bar music and the after-work crowd, or grab a drink and idle by the steps of Singapore River in solitude, it is the prime location for both locals and foreigners to hang out from dusk.

Overall, it felt as if we were experiencing our city for the first time since we were surrounded by tourists from the East and West even when roaming around the vicinity.

Efforts to integrate the Singapore culture, including the language (Singlish), food and art can be felt in every corner of the property.

5footway.inn Project Boat Quay is a fine example that proves that accessibility, style and service does not have to come with a price.
