Hotel Review: Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie (Discount Code Included!)

With hotels now moving towards a themed direction, Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie has also caught up with the trend.

Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie is inspired by Rex Cinema, a cinema close by featuring classic Bollywood films. Rex Cinemas is one of the oldest surviving cinemas in Singapore.

The latest addition from their sister property Rucksack Inn @ Lavender, Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie is newly renovated in January 2016, and had their official launch in March the same year.

Checking in to Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie

rucksack-inn-mackenzie-entrance-lift

Stepping through the lift of Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie transports you immediately into a cinema setting. Upon entering the reception, it’s impossible to notice just how red the entire hotel is, from the walls to the seats. I loved how retro the “Reception” sign is, with flashing vintage bulbs framing it.

The reception operates 24/7, and check in was swift.

As most properties move towards a later check in, Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie has preserved their early check in hours. Check in is at 2pm, while check out is at 12pm.

With a key card in hand, we activated the (not so responsive) elevator to our room level.

Our Superior Double (with window) room far exceeded our expectations of a boutique hotel. It provided everything a full-fledged hotel would. This even includes a hairdryer, full length mirror and hotel slippers! Some budget hotels that I’ve stayed at sometimes don’t even provide these.

A refrigerator, flask, bottled water, tea and coffee were provided in every room as well, including a safety deposit box.

I loved how the setting sun poured in from the back of the bed’s headboard! Even the wall-mounted TV screen felt too big for a room like ours. Needless to say, we had a restful sleep under the fluffy covers and clean sheets.

While Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie doesn’t provide breakfast, their “popcorn stand” at the reception offers free flow of tea, coffee, and grab-and-go snacks 24/7. It was what I needed to sustain the morning while WL slept in.

Complimentary Wi-Fi was provided throughout the property, which was reliable and strong throughout our stay.

Luggage storage was available for free as long as you’re a guest. This makes it very convenient for guests looking to take a short trip out of Singapore, or for backpackers whose stopover is in Singapore.

Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie’s Location

Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie is the gateway to exploring Singapore’s Indian cultural fest, being set right in the heart of Little India.

Its easy accessibility to the train station makes it a convenient way of getting there and around. The nearest MRT station, Little India, is just a 3-minute walk away.

Looking for food in the vicinity? Don’t miss the long-standing stall selling goreng pisang (deep fried banana fritter) for a quick snack at the coffee shop right beside Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie!

Nasi-Lemak-Kukus

We discovered Nasi Lemak Kukus (exact location here) while walking around the vicinity. While nondescript on the exterior, there’s more than meets the eye at this industrial-looking shopfront.

What makes them unique is how you can design your own nasi lemak. You get to select any dishes of your choice, and best of all, free flow traditional coconut rice and sambal (a type of chilli that always goes with nasi lemak)! You know their taste is guaranteed when they made it to the local Michelin guide.

You can even leave a memorable part of you here by drawing on the tiled walls, if you can find a space that is!

All in all, I liked how Rucksack Inn @ Mackenzie successfully combines affordable and comfort into one. Whether guests are here for business or leisure, alone or with company, this is one hotel that you know you don’t have to compromise comfort, accessibility or cost for.
